Dekalb Trailblazers is a youth cross country program for boys and girls aged 7 – 14. Our club’s mission is simple: to offer the community a fun, social and competitive introduction to the sport of cross country running. Practices will be held twice a week on wooded trails in the Oak Grove/Emory/North Decatur area and will include jogs, varied workouts, interval sessions and running related games. During the season we will compete in 5-6 youth cross country meets (held on the weekends) in the metro Atlanta area.
Whatever your child’s ability, the Dekalb Trailblazers club hopes to offer a fun and rewarding experience in distance running, with the end goal of instilling a lifelong love of the sport.
What is cross country?
The sport of cross country running dates back to the early 1900’s. Different from track and field where races are run on a 400m oval, cross country events are held on various ‘off-road’ courses (fields, wooded trails, golf courses, etc). Cross country meets are a team event. Points are awarded to the individual runners of eligible teams equal to the position in which they cross the finish line -- first place gets 1 point, second place gets 2 points, and so on. Teams are considered ineligible to score if they have fewer than the meet's required number of scorers, which is typically five. Only the first five finishers for a team are counted towards that team's score; the points for these runners are summed, and the teams are ranked based on the total, with the lowest total being the best.
The Dekalb Trailblazers is a non-profit organization and a certified youth club member of USATF Georgia - affiliation #45-0776.
