All Trailblazer club coaches are volunteers who take their personal time to instruct and coach your child. At the beginning of practices (and informally throughout), the coaches offer tips on topics such as running form, stretching, pace, and nutrition. Each age group will have at least 2 coaches present at every practice, but any parents, regardless of prior experience, are always welcome (and highly encouraged) to assist.
The success of the Trailblazer program depends on family involvement. Parents, caregivers, siblings and grandparents are all welcome to take part and many opportunities are available. All registered families will be asked to sign up for at least two volunteer activities. Volunteer opportunities may include:
Interested in being a volunteer coach? Our running club depends on the generous donation of time and energy by its volunteer coaches. Although no formal coaching experience is needed, some level of running experience is desired (being part of a XC or track team in high school or college OR someone who regularly participates in local road races, etc).
Each coach/volunteer must be a member of USATF in order for our club to be covered by the USATF liability insurance policy during practices. The $30 annual membership fee will be paid for by the Dekalb Trailblazers. Additionally, USATF requires a background check ($8) for all coaches who come in contact with youth athletes during practices or club-related activities. The background check is required annually and expires on December 31.
*As an added incentive for parents/family members to be involved at the volunteer coach level, a $20 reimbursement towards the youth registration fee will be applied. Please contact us at [email protected] with interest or questions about becoming a volunteer coach.
